Invergordon Football Team

A photo of an Invergordon Football Team, guess the date at late 1950s.
Picture added on 03 November 2010 at 11:12
Jimmy Farquhar it seems, played forever. Something is missing without Davie Moir, who also was a regular.
Added by Harry O'Neill on 03 November 2010
The gent in the front row (with the ball) looks like the same person I thought might be my Dad (Billy Lamb) in picture #1384, but looking at this one I'm not so sure now? I'll definitely need to track him down and ask now!
Added by JillianB on 09 November 2010
Great photo of the team and I recognise so many of the lads. You are right, Harry, Davie Moir is missing from this one. Jillian, the chap with the ball does look like Billy Lamb but no doubt, someone will put us right, especially the man himself!!!!!!!

3rd from the left Billy Sutherland and 3rd from the right his younger brother George. I think there were 6 Sutherland brothers, all lovely blokes!
Added by Bill Geddes on 29 November 2010
Just five I think, Bill. Donnie, Billy, George, Alec and Gordon.
Added by Rod Bell on 29 November 2010
Yes, they were a lovely family the Sutherlands. I used to play cowboys and indians with Gordon, and as a young kid I was facinated with Alec's tongue because he had an accident and bit a chunk out of it!!

Jeanette, you have made my day with your comments about my family. My dad was George (Pico). Finding these photos and comments are lovely as I was only 4 when he died so don't remember much about him. Will let Uncle Alec know his tongue fascinated you so much!!!
And you are correct Rod, 5 brothers and all in the correct order, well done!

Hi Gillian, your Dad was a lovely man and a really good footballer. He and your Mum were a class above me in school but I remember them both very well.
Added by Rosalie (Graham) Samaroo on 21 December 2010
Just to echo Rosalie's comment, Pico was one of the best.

Willie Mackay 2nd left front row.

Right on Anne!! First top left is Murdo Fraser and first top right is Eddie Benson. Third right bottom row is Ross Macleod. At least I think that is correct. Happy New Year to you Anne and everybody who is on this site.

Hi Gillian. I'm so glad that I lifted you a wee bit. I remember very well when you lost your Dad, my Mam told me I had left Invergordon by that time but it shocked everyone; my Mam told me he hadn't a bad bone in his body and that was the opinion of everybody. I'm so sorry you didn't get to know him but I'm sure your Mam would have told you about him and he certainly lives within you. Your Granny was a very calm Lady, that’s how I remind her it couldn't have been easy bringing up five boys - blimey Iv’e got three girls and it was a nightmare bringing them up. Yes I remember them all - I was probably a little pest, but I remember Alex Tounge and, maybe I'm wrong, but I think he supported Hearts. I know my brother Bill has tried to get in touch with him but to no avail, but love to you all. Jeanette xx

Hi Gillian, me again. I was wondering if you've ever looked up my brother’s photos - Bill Geddes. He has a number of photos - one of them picture #814 has a photo of your Dad when he was a wee boy. Also Nesta B. has another photo of your Dad picture #1013. Nesta McDonald has a photo with your Uncle Alex and picture #923 and picture #924 in my brother’s photos again of your uncle Alex, hope this helpful.

Hi Jeanette, thanks for the details of these photos. I love this site and seem to be on it for what seems like minutes but is actually hours!!! It's funny how I can recognise a lot of people on it as they don't seemed to have changed much from their childhood photos.
Do Gary and Granny Geddes (from the bottom of Gordon Terrace - the best place to live) belong to you? Gary was friendly with my wee brother Derek. Will let Uncle Alec know about Bill wanting to get in touch.

Player second from left George Campbell, Aggy Sutherland, Jimmy Fauqgher, last player in front row Johnnie Allan, next to him one of the Grant brothers.
Added by Tommy Macallister on 01 September 2013
Second row first player is Ronnie Ross .? ..? Billy Lamb, George McPherson I think if it is, unfortunately he passed away in the Royal Infirmary Inverness - he was in next bed to me in 1965 - Colitis was his trouble.
Added by Tommy Macallister on 01 September 2013
Are there two Benson's in the picture? Who is the player 2nd from the right in back? Looks familiar to me.
Added by Harry O'Neill on 02 September 2013
My apologies for wrongly informing on a player in the football team. The player I named as George Macpherson is wrong, it is Ross Macleod - he is third last player in front row, next to one of the Grant brothers. The last player is John Allan.
Added by Tommy Macallister on 03 September 2013
Back row don't know who trainer is but players from right: George Campbell, Aggy Sutherland, Jimmy Farrquher, don't know keeper, next player is Pico Sutherland, Doshi Benson, Eddie Benson;
Front row: Ronnie Ross, Sandy Mackenzie, Les Lamb, Ross Macloed, -- Grant, Johnnie Allan.
Added by Tommy Macallister on 03 September 2013
Quite like Sandy MacKenzie, Tom, but actually it is Willie MacKay and the Grant man is Geordie.
Added by Graham MacKenzie on 03 September 2013
Now I see it, thanks Graham, the others I think are right and it is Ross Macloed next to Geordie Grant, that was a good team. Tragic. The way Ross passed on he was next bed to me the old Royal Infirmary next to Ross was captain Peter Coombe who complained continually about smell very stressfull for Ross as with colitis even a drink of water passed right through him this. Guy Coombe was personal friend of Profumo remember that one, well Coombes was taken from private ward as he was drink the old gin, easier to watch in the old system, and nurses gave him a hard time, I was really upset for Ross to this day I feel it. He was so fit and a great player, sad.
Added by Tommy Macallister on 03 September 2013
Thanks Tommy, knew he was a Benson and Doshi came into mind, you have confirmed it.
Added by Harry O'Neill on 03 September 2013
Trainer first on the left at back, looks a bit like Podge Ross, but I'm not positive.
Added by Harry O'Neill on 04 September 2013
Trainer is Murdo Fraser.
Added by Gordon Peterson on 04 September 2013
Goalkeeper, 4th right back row is Ken Macpherson.
Added by Ronald Stewart on 06 September 2013
Ken Macpherson, was his father the railway ganger or was that another Macpherson?
Added by Harry O'Neill on 06 September 2013
Yes, his father was a railwayman Harry.
Added by Ronald Stewart on 07 September 2013
You are right Harry, that was Kenny Macpherson's Dad. Good photo of all the team.
Added by Rosalie Graham (Samaroo) on 07 September 2013
I played with 5 of these players between 1946 and 1951 at school and with Invergordon FC.
