Royal Marine Brass Band

The Royal Marine brass band plays its final farewell to the town. The date is a guess but the petrol price in decimal pence puts the date post 1971.

The "final farewell" to mark the shutdown of the naval establishment was indeed a memorable occasion at Invergordon.
It was to be marked by a performance on the High Street of a Royal Marine Band, and was due to take place on Tuesday the 30th March 1993. Many of the townsfolk, including elderly dockyard pensioners, pensioners widows etc were assembled to witness this historic event. Police patrolled the streets, restricted parking and generally prepared the High Street for the spectacle, all of this in the rain. The rain stopped on cue, the crowd waited ................and waited...........and waited, the police officers waited too.
Eventually a bus left the British Legion carrying the band down the dockyard pier towards HMS Scylla where the band played at the end of the pier, out of sight, and out of earshot of the High Street.
The event was regarded by many as an insult to the town and its people, and difficult to comprehend after such a long association. (see also Ross-shire Journal 16/4/93 Letters to Editor)

It was definately NOT 1975 - I took the picture and I was only 5 then! 1993 would be about right.

(Thank you for the info. - the date has been suitably altered - Site Admin.)
