Wow! What an amazing photo! The buildings on the left rear must have been located on what was the school playing fields in my time. Presumably these were Military barracks from WW1. I think the double hipped building at the extreme left must be the Secondary school buildings? I can't work out what that skyscraper in the mid left is, perhaps the Clydesdale bank? Most of these buildings were solidly built of stone and the picture gives a good impression of how interesting the town would now be if most of it had survived. I can see no trace of railway tracks along the sea front and this makes me wonder if the photo may be earlier than 1920?

Bill I think the skyscraper you are talking about is or was the Royal Bank, with the town offices to the left. The Clydesdale is more or less in the middle of the photograph.

This is from the same set, or from the same man, as the HMS King George Vth photos (picture #1364, picture #1460). The photographer appears to be L.T.O. Clements.

Phil, an excellent observation and I've added the picture links to your comment for clarity. Both the photos you refer to show snow on the floating dock so it is likely that this photo was taken at the same time - 1919 rather than 1920. Do we know if LTO Clements served on HMS King George V?
