Hi Bill, what year did you leave Invergordon?

This was Donnie Macdonald’s (Sparkie’s) garage. He lived with his wife and son in the caravan after the cottage was demolished to make way for the filling station and he then bought the house next to it to live in. Donnie ran taxis and school buses for many years and is now retired. Last time I saw him he lived in Evanton.

Many my age I'm sure remember Donnie Macdonald's garage (was it "Fina" petrol after "Cleveland"?) - I don’t recall seeing that primrose yellow Ford Classic or Anglia Van though! The photo does however awaken a memory of Mr Macdonald's lovely (to us as kids anyway, probably NOT for the driver!) Bedford Bus ("OB" Type"?). Wasn’t the caravan out front of the garage at one time? I also now recall trying to buy (at about age 12!) a marvellous 1940s Humber hearse from Donnie, always really helpful and patient with car-mad youngsters such as myself and Alan Drummond. I suspect today’s motor trade much lacking in terms of similar genuine and enthusiastic operators like Mr Macdonald. Mind you, the Taylors/Frews chaps were pretty good too - I can still remember the smell inside brand new Cortina 1600E's, Mk1 Capris et al. My, how we must have annoyed the salesmen, none of whom ever complained about those snotty kids leering over the latest models! Happy days...
