Demolition Works

The building on the corner of the High Street and Castle Road undergoing serious modifications to make way for the widening of Castle Road. The date is a guess.

I remember this building and think it was in fact the old Co-op, and think that this picture dates from around 1983 - 85.

Yes it was the old Co-Op with the grocery section downstairs and the Drapery upstairs. My mum used Boyds but the Co-op fascinated me because people got money back known as the 'Divi'.

Did this not become Rhinds and then later the Ross and Cromarty Enterprise building?

Hi Uisdean, Rhinds were in the shop next to this as this building was demolished to make the road wider and I seem to remember that the previous owner of the Rhind’s shop was in fact an old chemist (Legge?). Remember the work being carried out and a huge bonfire out the back when they were gutting the old chemist shop. I would like to see a photo of this old shop as this was one of the few old shops I can remember and in particular the black blinds that used to adorn the windows.

I am not sure about dates as I was living in Alness then, but Rhind’s was formed from the two shops that belonged to Legge the chemists which later became the Ross & Cromarty Enterprise and I think is now the Council/Rent office which used to be in the Town Chambers. I think the Co-op was demolished in later years as the corner is wider and there is a lay-by there now.

The Co-op was on the corner and latterly Chrissie Mackay and Annie Varnam and Fairburn ran it.
