Youngsters at Invergordon

A young group in the harbour area. The top of the Royal Hotel can be seen in the background. Recognise anybody? The date is a guess.

Certain the girl 2nd left is Reay Ross and the girl at end right is her sister Margaret Ross, both Pretoria House, Shore Road.

You are correct Graeme, the other girl is Ann MacLennan older sister of Yvonne, Sandy & Lillian. They lived above the Calley. Alan Ross is the boy pulling the face. The date is around 1962. We appear to be in the dockyard which was just across from our home.

(Margaret, thank you for the information and the date has been suitably amended - Site Administrator)

Sorry it cannot be in the 60s if the Royal Hotel is in the picture; it burnt down in the 50s.

Thanks everyone, I stand corrected - must have been confused with a previous fire.

Anon is right with period in time. I can remember being at a dance in the Joss Street Hall the night before the fire and walking home along Joss Street on a cold still night with the Royal intact. Next morning my father woke me to tell me it had been destroyed by fire (nothing to do with me I might add). This would have been 1972 as I left Invergordon to join the Navy in 1973.

Royal Hotel burned in the early 70s. I reckon it was January 1972. (There was a free poster of Marc Bolan in the 'Jackie' that day - I bought mine in Jock the Barbers, King St and then went to see the fire.............unless there was an earlier fire.) Also if you read the above comment, Margaret Macleod is in the picture and has given an estimated date for when this was taken.

The Royal Hotel burnt down in January 1973. I was at a dance in the Balnagown in Tain that night and on the way home to Invergordon in a taxi we could see the sky lit up and on approaching the High Street saw the hotel ablaze. Our taxi was diverted along Joss Street by the Police. It is something I remember vividly.

The actual date the Rroyal Hotel burnt down was 3rd Feburary 1973. I know this as this was the day I was born. My father Graham Ross (Barbaraville) told me.
