This is a telegraph office. The gent on the left is sitting at a Morse sending and receiving position. The telegraph sounder is behind his left shoulder and the key is on the desk top on his right. There is another morse position to his right also, the sounder is the speaker shaped box. The gentleman on the right is also a morse operator. The machine in front of him is a message tape receiver, the words were printed on this tape and then gummed onto message forms. This is a classic photograph of an early telegraph office. There is also a telephone exchange in the background, telegrams were also taken and delivered over the telephone. This might be the old post/telegraph office that was located on the High St next to the town hall. The post office was located on the main floor and the telegraph was located up on the second floor. In the right side of the photograph you can see what looks like a small window. This in fact was a means of sending messages from the telegraph down to the post office for delivery and also where telegrams were sent up from the post office to the telegraph office to be transmitted. I find this to be interesting because I spent 15 years working in a telegraph office in Canada as an operator. The photograph is indeed a classic because these types of telegraph offices do not exist anymore...

My grandfather JM Couper of Cromarty is listed in the 1891 census as a Telegraph Clerk, presumably in this office. The three figures clearly visible are not him.

Ross, the telegraph clerks were located on the main floor. There was wickets for postal business and a counter for telegrams.
