Billy, the cars area, would that be behind Taylors Garage?
Added by Harry O'Neill on 16 October 2018
Yes that is correct harry.Do you remember the Herchers they used to park there in the winter months sawing up logs and then selling them. The shed behind the group photo is where they kept the cutting gear.

Hi Billy, great photo of part of the Joss Street gang, brings back lots of memories, the girl front right is of course Elizabeth Munro. The house in the background I think was two flats, (upstair downstair),the upstair flat, the one in to photo was occupied by George and Lila MacKintosh and family, in front of that can be seen the fence of Dan Shaw's garden, he had a large garden and grew lots of raspberries.
The Cars so named because it was waste ground and old cars were dumped there, it is now a small residential estate called Wyvis Court.
Do you remember the tunnel that carried the large diameter oil pipe from the dockyard up through the Legion lane under the High Street through the Cars and up into the Seabank tank farm, the tunnel is still there but the ends have been sealed off, when I was a youngster I went up through that tunnel from end to end with a makeshift torch for a dare, it was quite scary.
In answer to Harry's question, the Cars were not behind but to the west of Taylors garage with a private garden in-between.

Hi Eddie The tunnel brings back memories we used to go through it crawling on top of the pipe as the tunnel was full of rain water. Dan shaw's garden was big stretching from the high street to the car's. I think the bottom flat of the house in the photo was occupied by a Mr and Mrs Simpson. Mr Simpson worked as a mechanic at Taylors garage.

The "Cars" was a place where i spent many hours playing...even on cold winter nights we would be there (nothing else to do..no playground,no youth club etc). It was a dumping ground for old vehicles from Taylors garage. Munro Hill and myself built a secret "den" for ourselves behind the garage where we used to smoke Wills Whiffs (cigarettes) and drink Woodpecker cider...Bachanalia!

Hi Billy, yes even us members of the Shore road/Outram street gang ventured there, keeping an eye out for those Joss street gang members though...
