Boat Yard BuildingAnother picture inside the building during dinghy construction and other repairs. The man in the middle of the photo is John MacAulay, yard engineer. Behind him is David Brown in the hat, working on Ted Aburrow’s old ferry boat “Kirsty”, now yard owned and in for a refit to be used as a boatyard tender for moorings etc.

Remember when Ted got Kirsty she was moored at slipway, I helped Ted - he sunk her to tighten the hull then pulled her up the beach to paint and get her ready for the ferry; had petrol engine started on petrol then on to paraffin.

As I remember Ted's boat "Kirsty" had a Kelvin "poppet" engine, don't know about the petrol/paraffin mix though, one day Ted was doing some work on the engine and he removed a plate from the side of the crankcase to expose the workings with the engine still running on idle, I found this quite amazing. When the boat was in for a refit they removed the old engine and fitted a small Yanmar diesel.
On the subject of engines, I believe that Hec's boat was powered by a Kelvin "ricardo".
