West end of the High Street looking westThis picture was taken in 1978 and shows the newly completed Shore Road and the link to the High Street. The railway line is still present and, judging by the warning sign, the level crossing was still in effect. The old fountain looks rather lonely.

Good pic Joan. Was the level crossing taken out when the road pattern changed? Note the level crossing sign is on the ground just to the right of the fountain.

When were the tracks removed from the road? I'm sure I rember them been there in the 1980s.

The fountain used to be at the top of the High Street, and was moved to its present site sometime in the '50s or early '60s. It commemorates the visit of George Vth whilst my grandfather John Macdonald of Seaview was the Provost.
