Northern Barrage - US Minelayers and a British Cruiser in the Cromarty FirthThis was photographed from on board either USS Shawmut or USS Aroostook, with a British light cruiser on the left. Two U.S. Minelayers are on the right. That nearest the camera is either USS Quinnebaug or USS Saranac. Immediately ahead of her is either USS Housatonic, USS Canonicus, USS Roanoke or USS Canandaigua.
These ships operated out of Invergordon (US Naval Base 17) and on the left is the Black Isle while Invergordon is on the right with Fyrish in the background.

It's a shame that a higher definition copy is not readily available as there is quite a lot of detail in the background. You can see the floating dock, for instance, with a ship on board, and it is likely that the second, smaller, floating dock is moored to the left of that.
