The Comm was obviously a bit upmarket in those days. A few years later it was Nationalised by the Government along with the other pubs and the off licence shop which I believe was next to the Commercial bar. This was an attempt to restrict drinking and its supposed detrimental effect on the War effort. It probably had the opposite result. At least it was safe to cross the road!
