Tommy Ross

Recent entries have mentioned Tommy Ross. This is an old Ross-shire Journal photograph which may be of interest. The caption accompanying the photo is "Mr T Ross (left), president of Mid-Ross Football Association, and Mr T MacKenzie (shoemaker, Saltburn), secretary of Ross-shire F.A. with the trophies to be competed for by Ross-shire teams."

The numbers handwritten on the photo correspond to the descriptions of the trophies and are, from left to right,:
1: Ross-shire Junior Cup;
2: Summerhall Cup;
3: Hong Kong Cup;
4: Mid Ross Shield;
5: Ross-shire League (Perrins Cup);
6: "Ross Cup" or 2nd Ross-shire Cup;
7: Tain Pattison Cup;
(The Photo is by JD Ross, 10 Shore Road, Invergordon)

Lovely to see such a good picture of Uncle Tom and Sybil's father.

Ah yes, of the "Tommy Ross's" mentioned on this site this is the man that I know. "Big Dave", my great uncle who had the grocer's opposite Tommy's shop, sent me over to Tommy to get "rubber nails". Tommy had me searching all over the shop until he just collapsed with laughter and told me that "rubber nails" didn't exist. He and Dave laughed about that for a long time. Tommy and Dave used to have their lunch together sometimes in either of their shops and Tommy asked me one day if I liked "second day" soup. When I said "yes" he said "then come back tomorrow". He was quite a character and enjoyed a good laugh.
